Why he is on the BBD Watch List

Smith began his commercial real estate career in 1982 and became the first African American broker at Cushman & Wakefield of Georgia in 1989. He later created the brokerage division at H.J. Russell & Company before launching T. Dallas Smith & Company with a focus on representing tenants.

His company now describes itself as a national commercial real estate firm. It reports more than eight million square feet of represented office and industrial space, more than 5,000 acres of land acquisitions and more than $16 billion in completed transaction value across the team’s combined experience.

The editorial angle we are tracking

Smith’s story sits at the intersection of ownership, commercial real estate, succession and access. He built in an industry where relationships, information and capital have historically limited who gets to participate. His development of diverse talent is as important to the Black Biz Daily lens as the transaction volume.

We want to examine how independent firms compete for major corporate assignments, how tenant representation creates influence inside local economies and how founders transfer relationships and authority to the next generation of leaders.

03

Leadership beyond the firm

Smith has served in major civic and business roles, including president of the Atlanta Commercial Board of REALTORS and board positions connected to Georgia Power, the University System of Georgia, the Metro Atlanta Chamber and the Westside Future Fund. These roles make him worth watching not only as an owner, but as a leader influencing development, education and economic opportunity across Georgia.
